The 457 visa allows Australian or overseas businesses to employ person from overseas to work temporarily in Australia for up to 4 years. The employee must be sponsored by the employer. This is not a visa that one can obtain without sponsorship.

As a 457 visa applicant you must have the skills, experience and attributes for the position and only certain occupations are able to be sponsored for the 457 visa. Generally these occupations are at a trades level and higher.

Depending on your occupation, country of origin and salary, you may be required to demonstrate an adequate level of English. This is usally shown by doing an IELTS test but there are some other way to demonstrate adequate English.

Also depending on your occupation and country of origin, you may be required to undertake a skill assessment.

Your immediate family can be included in your initial application or added later by making a separate application.

Recently it has become a requirement for all 457 visa applicants to show that they hold adequate health insurance at the time the visa application is decided and applicants are also obliged to maintain the health insurance cover during their stay in Australia on the 457 visa.
